The study deals with historical libraries in Slovakia, among others the Library
of the Matica Slovenská in Martin, which can be considered as the first Slovak
public library, and the library of the Institute of Slavic Studies in
Bratislava. The study summarises the role of these libraries in the Slovak
national movements in throughout the 19th century and till the establishment of
the Czechoslovak Republic.
